Menopause age calculator

This menopause age calculator estimates when yours is likely from your mother's age at menopause, smoking and your current cycle. The US average is 52, and the usual range is 45 to 58. If you're already going 60 days or more without a period, your final period usually comes within 1 to 3 years, which says more than any average.

Menopause age by the numbers

How the menopause age calculator works

  1. 1

The estimate starts from your mother's age at natural menopause, which the US Office on Women's Health calls one way to tell when you might reach yours. Without it, it starts from the US average of 52.

  2. 2

If you smoke, or quit less than 10 years ago, the estimate moves up to 2 years earlier. Women who quit more than 10 years ago had the same risk of early menopause as women who never smoked.

  3. 3

If you've gone 60 days or more without a period, the estimate comes from your cycle instead: that stage, the late transition, lasts 1 to 3 years on average.

  4. 4

It's a guide, not a forecast. Genes explained 63% of the variation in menopause age in a twin study, and pregnancies, health conditions and other factors account for the rest, so no calculator can give you an exact year.

What people often expect

“A calculator can tell me the year I'll reach menopause”

What the evidence shows

No calculator can. Genes explained 63% of the variation in menopause age in a twin study, and smoking, pregnancies and health conditions nudge the rest. Once your cycle starts changing, it predicts better than any formula: after you start going 60 days or more without a period, the final period usually comes within 1 to 3 years.

Beyond the calculator: check your menopause stage

    8 questions on your cycle

How regular your periods are, whether one cycle has been a week or more longer or shorter than the one before, and the longest gap in the last 12 months. This places you on STRAW+10: late reproductive, early transition, late transition or postmenopause.

What decides your menopause age

Your mother's age at menopause

Menopause age runs in families. In a study of 275 identical and 353 non-identical twin pairs, genes explained 63% of the variation in the age women reached menopause, and both early and late menopause ran in families. The US Office on Women's Health suggests your mother's age at menopause as one way to tell when you might reach yours. Ask her, or another older relative, if you can.

Smoking and menopause age

Smoking is the clearest lifestyle factor. Smokers can reach menopause as many as 2 years before nonsmokers. In a pooled analysis of 17 studies, current smokers had about twice the risk of menopause before 40 (relative risk 2.05) and before 45 (1.80). Quitting helps: women who had stopped more than 10 years earlier had the same risk as women who never smoked.

Your cycle: the best guide once it changes

Averages matter less once your own cycle starts changing. When the length of your cycle varies by 7 days or more from one cycle to the next, you've entered the early transition, which varies in length. Once you go 60 days or more without a period, you're in the late transition, which lasts 1 to 3 years on average. Menopause is confirmed 12 months after the final period.

Pregnancies, the pill and other factors

Having children is linked with a slightly later menopause. In the Nurses' Health Study II, which followed 108,887 women, those with 2 or more pregnancies were less likely to reach menopause before 45. In SWAN, having given birth and past use of the pill were linked with later menopause, while lower education, not being employed and a history of heart disease were linked with earlier menopause. These effects are modest.

Early, average and late menopause

Menopause before 40 is premature, also called premature ovarian insufficiency, and between 40 and 45 it's early; about 5% of women go through early menopause naturally. In a pooled analysis of 17 studies, 1.9% of women reached menopause before 40. Menopause at 55 or later counts as late. The age matters for later health: menopause before 40 was linked with a 1.55 times higher risk of heart disease or stroke.

When menopause age can't be estimated

Chemotherapy, pelvic radiation and surgery to remove both ovaries can cause menopause at any age, so family history and smoking stop being useful guides. Hormonal contraception and HRT can hide when menopause happens, because the bleeding comes from the treatment. If you can't tell when your last natural period was, UK experts say contraception can be stopped at 55, when pregnancy risk is extremely low.

When menopause age needs a doctor

  • Periods stop or become irregular before 40

See a doctor. It may be premature ovarian insufficiency, diagnosed with 2 FSH blood tests 4 to 6 weeks apart. More →

  • Periods stop between 40 and 45

See a doctor. After early menopause, HRT is usually advised until at least the average age of menopause, to protect bones and heart.

  • Still having periods at 55 or later

Talk to your doctor. Late menopause is linked with a higher risk of uterine cancer.

  • Any bleeding after 12 months without a period

See a doctor. Bleeding after menopause always needs checking. More →

Menopause age calculator: questions women ask

How accurate is a menopause age calculator?

It gives a rough guide, not a date. Genes explain about 63% of the variation in menopause age, and smoking and pregnancies nudge the rest. Once you start going 60 days or more without a period, your cycle is the better predictor: the final period usually comes within 1 to 3 years.

How can I predict when I'll go through menopause?

Start with your mother's age at menopause, then adjust up to 2 years earlier if you smoke. When your periods start changing, track them: gaps of 60 days or more mean menopause is usually 1 to 3 years away.

Will I go through menopause at the same age as my mother?

Often around the same age, because timing is largely inherited: genes explained 63% of the variation in a twin study. It's a guide, not a guarantee, and smoking can bring yours earlier.

Does smoking make menopause come earlier?

Yes, by up to 2 years. Current smokers had about twice the risk of menopause before 40 in a pooled analysis. After 10 years without smoking, the risk was the same as for never-smokers.

What is the average age of menopause?

52 in the United States, with a usual range of 45 to 58. In SWAN, a study of US women, the median age at natural menopause was 51.4.

How long after periods become irregular does menopause happen?

It depends on the stage. The early transition, when cycle length starts varying, differs from woman to woman. Once you go 60 days or more without a period, the final period usually comes within 1 to 3 years. Perimenopause as a whole lasts about 4 years on average.

Does having children delay menopause?

Slightly. Women with 2 or more pregnancies were less likely to reach menopause before 45 in a study of 108,887 women, and breastfeeding was linked with lower risk too. The effect is modest.

Does the pill delay menopause?

No, but it can hide it: the monthly bleeds come from the pill, not your own cycle. If you can't tell when your natural periods stopped, contraception can be stopped at 55.

Is the calculator free?

Yes, and so is the full stage check it leads to. The doctor-ready report and daily tracking come with a 7-day trial for $1, then $99 a year. Cancel anytime.
