Best weight loss supplements for menopause
No supplement causes meaningful weight loss in menopause. In a network meta-analysis of 111 trials, the best performers, such as psyllium fiber, spirulina and green tea, produced small losses, from 0.82 kg with curcumin to 3.70 kg with psyllium. A review of 315 trials found only 16 high-quality studies showing any weight benefit. The FDA warns that many weight loss pills and teas contain dangerous hidden ingredients. GLP-1 drugs, diet and exercise work better.
Weight loss supplements give small losses at best: psyllium 3.70 kg, green tea 1.25 kg, berberine 0.88 kg. Hidden-drug warnings, and what works better in menopause.

What the evidence shows
Supplements for weight loss have a limited high-quality evidence base, and effects are small even in the better trials. Menopause-branded products don't have demonstrated weight benefits either: Estroven says its main formula has no proven weight benefit. Some pills sold as natural contain hidden drugs.
Menopause weight loss supplements: what studies show
Do weight loss supplements work?
A 2021 systematic review of 315 randomized trials of 14 supplements and alternative therapies found only 52 were low risk of bias with enough data. Of those, just 16 showed a significant difference in weight between groups, ranging from 0.3 to 4.93 kg. The authors concluded the high-quality evidence base is limited.
Fiber, spirulina and green tea for weight loss
A 2023 network meta-analysis of 111 trials with 6,171 adults with overweight or obesity found small weight losses: psyllium fiber 3.70 kg, Nigella sativa 2.09 kg, spirulina 1.77 kg, chitosan 1.70 kg, glucomannan 1.36 kg, green tea 1.25 kg and curcumin 0.82 kg compared with placebo. Certainty ranged from high for spirulina to low for green tea and glucomannan.
Berberine for weight loss
Berberine is promoted as 'nature's Ozempic'. A 2026 meta-analysis of 23 trials found it reduced body weight by 0.88 kg on average, BMI slightly and waist circumference, but not waist-to-hip ratio. The authors flagged problems with purity, potency, blinding and randomization in the trials.

Estroven says its Complete formula has no demonstrated weight benefit and sells a separate weight management product. Amberen's company-linked trials reported lower weight and waist size, but independent confirmation is lacking.
Learn more →Hidden drugs in weight loss pills
The FDA says many diet pills, fat burners and weight loss teas are likely contaminated with dangerous hidden ingredients. They're sometimes sold as dietary supplements or all-natural products, often with many positive reviews, and can cause severe health problems and hospitalization. Its list covers only a fraction of such products.
What works better than weight loss supplements
Combining healthy eating with exercise is far more effective than dieting alone, and exercise reduces visceral fat in postmenopausal women. For obesity, prescription GLP-1 drugs such as semaglutide and tirzepatide are FDA-approved for long-term weight management.
