Amberen review

Amberen is a hormone-free, soy-free supplement based on succinate salts. Amberen Menopause was tested in a 90-day trial of 125 women, and Amberen Perimenopause, which adds a vitamin B complex, in a 90-day trial with 105 women completing it. Both reported better symptom scores than placebo, but all trials come from one research group that includes an employee of the brand's owner.

Amberen is a hormone-free succinate supplement tested in company-linked 90-day trials. What they showed for perimenopause, the 92% claim, and which pack to buy.

Amberen for perimenopause: expectation vs reality

What people often expect

“Amberen is clinically proven to relieve 92% of hot flashes”

What the evidence shows

The 92% figure is a company claim from its own perimenopause trial; the published paper reports statistically significant improvements in most symptom scores, not a 92% cure rate. All Amberen trials were run by overlapping authors, and no independent trials are in the sources we reviewed. The label says the statements haven't been evaluated by the FDA.

Amberen review: ingredients, trials and safety

What's in Amberen

Amberen's perimenopause formula combines what the company calls a proprietary mineral complex of adaptogenic succinates with its Smart B vitamin B complex. The company says it's free from drugs, hormones and soy. The menopause product is sold as Amberen Multi-Symptom Menopause Relief, and published trials describe it as an ammonium succinate-based dietary supplement. Amberen is made by Alliance Pharmaceuticals.

Amberen Menopause: the trials

In a 3-month randomized, double-blind trial, 125 women aged 42 to 60 with menopause symptoms took Amberen or placebo. Amberen improved 13 of 21 Greene Climacteric Scale symptoms. A pooled analysis of two identical trials, with 114 women on Amberen and 113 on placebo, found improvement in 16 of 21 symptoms and lower anxiety.

Amberen for perimenopause: the trial

The 2024 perimenopause trial enrolled 106 women up to 50 years old with hot flashes and psychological symptoms, and 105 completed it. Amberen plus Smart B significantly improved most Greene scale symptoms, anxiety, depression, well-being and mood scores compared with placebo. Side effects were few, mild and transient. The lead author works for Alliance Pharma.

Amberen, hormones and weight

Amberen contains no hormones, yet in the pooled trials estradiol rose significantly from baseline in women taking it, while FSH and LH didn't differ from placebo. Weight, BMI and waist and hip measurements fell in the Amberen group. These findings come from the company-linked trials and haven't been independently confirmed.

Amberen's marketing claims

The perimenopause product page says that in the 90-day trial, 92% had hot flash relief, 98% had relief from stress, 86% felt less tired and 82% had less difficulty sleeping. These percentages are company statements. The site notes that the statements haven't been evaluated by the FDA and that results may vary.

What guidelines say

The North American Menopause Society doesn't recommend supplements or herbal remedies for hot flashes. It recommends HRT as the most effective treatment, and CBT, clinical hypnosis, SSRIs or SNRIs, gabapentin and fezolinetant as non-hormonal options. Supplements aren't FDA-approved for safety or effectiveness before they're sold.

Amberen for menopause and perimenopause: questions women ask

Does Amberen work for perimenopause?

In one 90-day trial with 105 women completing it, Amberen plus Smart B improved most symptom scores versus placebo. The trial was led by an Alliance Pharma employee, and there's no independent confirmation.

Does Amberen have hormones in it?

No. The company says its formula is free from drugs, hormones and soy; it's based on succinate salts.

Does Amberen help with hot flashes?

Its trials measured hot flashes within the Greene scale and reported improvement. The company's 92% hot flash relief figure is its own claim, not a guideline finding.

Does Amberen cause weight loss?

In pooled company-linked trials, weight, BMI and waist size fell in the Amberen group. That hasn't been independently confirmed, and Amberen isn't approved for weight loss.

What's the difference between Amberen Menopause and Perimenopause?

The perimenopause formula adds a Smart B vitamin complex to the succinate blend and was tested in women up to 50 years old.

How much does Amberen cost?

Prices vary by retailer and pack size. Amberen's own site sends buyers to Amazon and other retailers rather than selling directly, so check the current listing; the 90-day pack works out cheaper per day than buying three 30-day packs.

How long does Amberen take to work?

The trials lasted 90 days, and the company bases its claims on that period. Results may vary.
