sources, every one listed at the back

How every entry is built

  • At a glance. How common it is, the options with the strongest evidence, and how urgent it usually is.
  • Why it happens. What hormones do, and what else adds to it.
  • What else it could be. Look-alike conditions such as thyroid disease, anemia or sleep apnea, the clues that point to them, and the usual test.
  • What helps, ranked by evidence. Hormone therapy, non-hormonal medicines, CBT and self-care, strongest evidence first.
  • See a doctor if. When to book, when to hurry, and when to call 911.

What the evidence labels mean

  • Strong

Strong evidence. Works. Backed by good randomized trials or a firm recommendation in major clinical guidelines.

  • Some

Some evidence. Probably helps. Trials show a benefit, but they are few, small or short, or guidelines list it as one option among several.

  • Limited

Limited evidence. Might help. Results are early, weak or conflicting, so weigh cost and side effects before you try it.

  • No good evidence

No good evidence. No reliable sign that it helps this symptom: trials found no benefit, or there are no good trials.

  • Depends on the cause

Depends on the cause. Works when a specific cause is found and treated, such as low iron or an infection.

  • Not recommended

Not recommended. A major guideline or the FDA advises against it for this use, because it doesn't work, isn't proven safe, or its risks outweigh the benefits.

Questions

What formats do I get?

An EPUB for Kindle (through Send to Kindle), Apple Books or Google Play Books, and a PDF laid out like the printed book, with the same page numbers as the index.

Is there a paperback?

Yes. The paperback and hardcover are on Amazon, and so is the Kindle edition. The text is the same in every format. Paperback, hardcover, Kindle.

Does it cover menopause, or only perimenopause?

Both: the years of change and the years after the last period, including the silent changes in bone, blood pressure and cholesterol.

How is it different from the symptom guides on this site?

The atlas puts 40 entries in one place, rewritten and updated for print, with an evidence label on every option, a Symptom Finder, a one-page Red Flags list and an index.

Is this medical advice?

No. It explains what clinical guidelines and studies say, labels the evidence for each option, and tells you when to see a doctor. It has no doses or treatment plans.
