What the perimenopause search data shows
Perimenopause went from niche word to everyday search
Across the US, the Google Trends index for "perimenopause" averaged 10 in 2021-22, 14.3 in 2022-23, 21 in 2023-24, 34.3 in 2024-25 and 43.6 in 2025-26. That's 4.4 times higher over four years, while "menopause" grew 1.7-fold, from 46.9 to 78.3. Perimenopause is still the smaller search, but it's the one growing fast.
Where women search for perimenopause most
Relative to all searches in each state, interest in perimenopause is highest in Vermont (83), Oregon (74) and Maine (70), followed by Kentucky and New Hampshire (68) and Minnesota, Virginia and Washington (67). It's lowest in Nevada (46), Mississippi (47), Texas (49), Florida (50) and Alabama (52). Northern states lead; the South and Southwest trail.
Which states say perimenopause instead of menopause
Comparing the two words inside each state shows who has adopted the newer term. Maine, North Dakota and Vermont lead at 42%, followed by Alaska, Missouri, Nebraska and New Hampshire at 41%. At the other end are New York (29%), Mississippi (31%), Arkansas (32%), Florida and Georgia (33%). California and Texas sit at 35%, just below the national 35.7%.
Where the shift to perimenopause happened fastest
Indiana's share went from 15% in 2021-22 to 39% in 2025-26, 2.6 times higher, the biggest change in the country. Delaware (2.57x), Michigan and North Dakota (2.47x), Oklahoma and Virginia (2.44x) follow. New York changed least, from 18% to 29% (1.61x), then New Mexico (1.73x) and Kansas (1.83x).
Why the word perimenopause matters
Perimenopause is the transition before the final period, and it usually starts in the 40s: the median age at onset was 47.5 in a large US study, and it lasts about 4 years on average. Women who search only for "menopause" can miss that irregular periods, sleep problems and mood changes years earlier may already be part of it.
Learn more →How we measured perimenopause searches
We pulled Google Trends data for the United States by state through DataForSEO for two 12-month windows: October 2021 to September 2022 and October 2025 to September 2026. Search interest is the Trends index for "perimenopause" alone. The share is the Trends comparison of "perimenopause" against "menopause" inside each state. The national trend uses weekly data averaged per season. Trends data is a sample of Google searches, divided by total searches in each place and time, then scaled from 0 to 100, so it shows relative popularity, not search counts.

Perimenopause search data: questions
Which state searches for perimenopause the most?
Vermont, with a Google Trends index of 83 in 2025-26, followed by Oregon (74) and Maine (70). The index compares searches for perimenopause with all searches in each state, so it reflects how much attention the topic gets locally, not raw search counts.
Are searches for perimenopause increasing?
Yes, sharply. The national Google Trends index for perimenopause rose from an average of 10 in 2021-22 to 43.6 in 2025-26, a 4.4-fold increase. Over the same years, its share of combined searches for the two words went from 17.6% to 35.7%.
Which state searches for perimenopause the least?
Nevada, with an index of 46, then Mississippi (47), Texas (49), Florida (50) and Alabama (52). New York has the lowest share of searches that use the word perimenopause rather than menopause, at 29%.
What's the difference between perimenopause and menopause?
Perimenopause is the transition before your final period, when hormones swing and periods become irregular. Menopause is the point 12 months after your last period. Perimenopause usually starts in the 40s and lasts about 4 years on average, often longer.
What does a Google Trends score of 100 mean?
It marks the highest relative interest in the set being compared. Google divides searches for a term by all searches in each place and time, then scales the result from 0 to 100. So a score of 100 doesn't mean more searches in total, only a higher share of local searches.
Why is Wyoming missing from the rankings?
In the 2025-26 data, Wyoming scored 100 for both perimenopause and menopause, far above every other state. That pattern is typical of a small-sample spike rather than a real difference, so we exclude Wyoming from the rankings and show it in gray.
