Flax seeds and estrogen
Flax seeds don't contain estrogen, but flaxseed is the richest food source of lignans, a type of phytoestrogen: 301,129 micrograms per 100 g in a Dutch analysis, vs 29,331 for sesame, the next richest seed. Gut bacteria turn these lignans into compounds called enterolignans. Despite that, a trial of 188 women found flaxseed bars didn't reduce hot flashes more than placebo. Ground flaxseed is a fiber-rich food, not a menopause treatment.
Flaxseed is the richest food source of lignans, a type of phytoestrogen. What studies show for hot flashes and estrogen, safety, and how chia seeds compare.
Flaxseed and estrogen: expectation vs reality
What people often expect
“Ground flaxseed is a natural way to raise estrogen and stop hot flashes”
What the evidence shows
In a placebo-controlled trial, flaxseed bars providing 410 mg of lignans a day reduced hot flash scores by 4.9 points vs 3.5 on placebo, a difference that wasn't significant. In both groups, slightly more than a third of women halved their hot flash scores, showing how strong the placebo effect is. Both groups had digestive side effects from the fiber.
Flaxseed phytoestrogens: what they are and what they do
Do flax seeds have estrogen?
No. Flaxseed contains lignans, mainly secoisolariciresinol, which are plant compounds, not human estrogen. In the gut, bacteria convert plant lignans into enterolignans called enterodiol and enterolactone, which researchers study for possible effects on cancer and heart disease risk. Flaxseed and flaxseed oil supplements are also sold for their omega-3 fatty acid, alpha linolenic acid, which is a separate compound.

In a Dutch database of 109 foods and drinks, flaxseed had 301,129 micrograms of lignans per 100 g, sesame seeds 29,331, grain products 7 to 764, and brassica vegetables 185 to 2,321. In a Canadian analysis, nuts and oilseeds had the most total phytoestrogens of any food group. Soy, by contrast, is the main source of isoflavones, the other big phytoestrogen group.

The largest trial, run by the North Central Cancer Treatment Group, gave 188 women flaxseed bars with 410 mg of lignans or placebo bars. Hot flash scores fell by 4.9 points with flaxseed and 3.5 with placebo, not a significant difference. The authors concluded the results don't support using flaxseed lignans for hot flashes.
Learn more →Do flax seeds increase estrogen?
There's no good evidence they raise estrogen levels in a meaningful way. Trials of phytoestrogens in postmenopausal women, mostly soy, found no significant change in estradiol or FSH. Flaxseed lignans are a different class, and the evidence on hormone levels is thinner, but the hot flash trial found no effect beyond placebo.
Flaxseed for menopause: other possible benefits
NCCIH says one trial suggests flaxseed mucilage powder might support weight loss in adults with overweight or obesity, but flaxseed lignan extract and flaxseed oil don't seem to help with weight. Research on blood sugar is limited, and NCCIH is funding early work on flaxseed and the gut microbiome. Ground flaxseed adds fiber to your diet.
Is flaxseed safe?
Don't eat raw or unripe flaxseeds, which may contain potentially toxic compounds. Limited amounts of flaxseed and flaxseed oil may be safe short term, up to 6 months. Higher doses can cause bloating, fullness and diarrhea; in the hot flash trial, both groups reported bloating, gas, diarrhea and nausea. Flaxseed might interact with blood thinners.
Chia seeds and estrogen
Chia seeds don't contain estrogen, and they weren't among the foods measured in the phytoestrogen databases we used, so there's no reliable figure for their phytoestrogen content. Among seeds that were measured, flaxseed and sesame were by far the richest in lignans. There are no trials of chia seeds for menopause symptoms in the sources we reviewed.
Flaxseed vs soy vs HRT
Soy isoflavone supplements reduced hot flash frequency by 20.6% in a meta-analysis, while flaxseed lignans showed no effect beyond placebo in their main trial. Both are far less effective than HRT. If you can't take estrogen, prescription options such as SSRIs, SNRIs and gabapentin reduce hot flashes by about 40% to 65%.

Using flaxseed in menopause
Ground flaxseed as food
Limited evidenceA fiber-rich addition to your diet and the richest lignan source, but it didn't reduce hot flashes more than placebo in the main trial.
Soy isoflavones instead
Some evidenceIf you want a plant-based option for hot flashes, soy isoflavone supplements have better trial evidence than flaxseed, with about 20.6% fewer hot flashes.

When to check with a doctor about flaxseed
You take blood thinners
Check with your doctor before adding flaxseed supplements, which might interact with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
You're pregnant or breastfeeding
Ask before using flaxseed supplements; some studies suggest flaxseed may be unsafe in pregnancy.
Bloating or diarrhea that doesn't settle
Cut back and see a doctor if it continues.
Hot flashes affecting daily life
Ask about HRT or non-hormonal medicines.
Flaxseed and estrogen: questions women ask
Do flax seeds increase estrogen?
There's no good evidence they do. Flaxseed contains lignans, which gut bacteria turn into enterolignans, but trials of phytoestrogens after menopause found no significant rise in estradiol, and flaxseed didn't reduce hot flashes beyond placebo.
Do flax seeds contain estrogen or oestrogen?
No. They contain lignans, a type of phytoestrogen. Flaxseed is the richest food source of lignans, with 301,129 micrograms per 100 g in a Dutch analysis.
Is ground flaxseed good for menopause?
It's a healthy, fiber-rich food, but in the main trial of 188 women it didn't reduce hot flashes more than placebo. Don't expect it to replace proven treatments.
How much flaxseed should I eat for menopause?
There's no proven dose for menopause symptoms. The trial used bars with 410 mg of lignans a day without benefit over placebo. NCCIH says limited amounts may be safe for up to 6 months.
Do chia seeds have estrogen?
No. Chia seeds weren't measured in the phytoestrogen databases we used, and there are no menopause trials of chia in our sources. Flaxseed and sesame are the best-documented seed sources of lignans.
Is flaxseed or soy better for hot flashes?
Soy has better evidence: isoflavone supplements reduced hot flash frequency by 20.6% in a meta-analysis, while flaxseed lignans didn't beat placebo. Neither matches HRT.
Related →Is flaxseed oil the same as ground flaxseed?
No. Flaxseed oil supplements mainly provide the omega-3 fatty acid ALA; lignans are concentrated in the seed. NCCIH notes flaxseed oil doesn't seem to help with weight loss.
Can flaxseed cause side effects?
Yes, mostly digestive: bloating, fullness, gas and diarrhea, especially at higher doses. Don't eat it raw or unripe, and check with your doctor if you take blood thinners.
Are flax seeds good for perimenopause?
They're a healthy food with fiber and the most lignans of any food measured, but a trial of 188 women found flaxseed bars didn't reduce hot flashes more than placebo. For perimenopause symptoms, HRT and proven non-hormonal medicines work better.
Can flaxseed affect breast cancer or hormone treatment?
The sources we reviewed don't show a clear effect either way. NCCIH says there are theoretical reasons flaxseed might interact with some drugs, such as blood thinners. If you're on breast cancer treatment, check any flaxseed supplement with your oncology team.
Is ground flaxseed better than whole?
NCCIH doesn't compare them, but it warns against eating raw or unripe flaxseed, which may contain potentially toxic compounds. The flaxseed studied for hot flashes was baked into bars, and it still didn't beat placebo.
